The history behind Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, in Grafton, West Virginia, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother Ann Reeves Jarvis, who in turn had founded Mother’s Day Work Clubs many years earlier.
Anna Jarvis began a campaign to make Mother’s Day a national holiday, and she succeeded when in 1914 the US President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
